AACC LOCKDOWN DRILL: WE GOT IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME … NO, SERIOUSLY!

In the fall of 2023, Anne Arundel Community College held its first-ever Active Shooter Drills. Beginning in February 2023, a multi-departmental planning committee carefully put together the framework for the exercise. With the participation of AACC Public Safety and Police, facility personnel, faculty members, staff, students, and community volunteers serving as building controllers or evaluators, 19 separate lockdown drills were conducted on their main campus in Arnold, MD. Using multiple color-coded teams of evaluators in each building, the drills went smoothly. Despite checking every door on every building floor, the evaluation teams were only in the buildings for an average of 12.9 minutes.

SPEAKER BIO

Arlene Crow began her career in Emergency Management and Response as a firefighter/EMT for the City of Lakeland, Florida. Following the 9/11 attacks, she retired from the fire department and went to work for the Florida Department of Health as the Manager of Emergency Operations in Orlando, Florida. Arlene’s primary responsibility was to develop a counter-bioterrorism plan for the Central Florida area. In 2009, Forbes Magazine rated the Orlando/Orange County, Florida area 9th in the nation for bioterrorism preparedness.

Arlene became a DHS & FEMA certified instructor for multiple topics, including Incident Command, Hospital Emergency Response, WMD Awareness, and Biological Response. She was an adjunct instructor for the Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, AL, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA. She has also trained with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort. Detrick, MD. Arlene holds a masters from American Military University in Disaster and Emergency Response, as well as a certificate as a Homeland Security Specialist from Louisiana State University.

In 2012, Arlene retired from the State of Florida to lead an emergency planning and response team in the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Administration (HEPRA) for the District of Columbia. In 2018, she joined the staff of Anne Arundel Community College as an adjunct instructor and assumed the role of the college’s first Emergency Manager in 2019.

 

Mental Health Awareness – A Grass Roots Movement

In 2018, the CDC raised awareness for the fact that the construction and trades industry ranked second in the country in the rate of suicide amongst its workers. The suicide rate for the industry is five times greater than the rate for all fatal work-related injuries. Employers have a responsibility to understand these statistics and the role that mental health can play in worker safety and safe work environments. The barriers to addressing this are linked to stigma, DEI, myths and misconceptions about mental health and the lack of knowledge of existing resources.

Presenting Team Bio and Headshots:

Emily Martin Douglas serves as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Specialist for Facilities Management (FM). The DEI Specialist is responsible for implementing Inclusive Excellence at FM, and managing programs that support and foster an inclusive workplace environment such as the FM Language Program and Mental Health Awareness in Partnership with FEAP and FM OHS. Emily holds the Diversity and Inclusion for HR Certificate from Cornell University, and the Inclusive Workplace Culture Specialty from SHRM. In addition, Emily is a trained mediator and certified in Mental Health First Aid for Adults.

Chris Hoy attended Brigham Young University (construction management) and started his career in the private construction industry before joining the University of Virginia in 1997. His first UVA project was a total renovation of UVA’s Emergency Department and more than 20 years later, he was once again charged with improving the hospital’s ED, but as the senior supervisory construction administration manager on the University Hospital Expansion project. Chris is currently managing multiple projects along the Emmet-Ivy Corridor, which will transform a significant entry point to the UVA.

Shelomith Gonzalez joined the UVA Facilities Management team as Occupational Health and Safety Manager in 2021. Shelomith has 18 years of experience in safety and risk management in the construction and facilities management trades and is an expert in the design and development of safety policy, procedure, and implementation. Shelomith’s philosophy and approach to safety is that of empowering workers to prioritize their lives and wellbeing, educating them in how to do so, and helping keep systems and processes that employee’s function within operating safely.

Mary Sherman, LCSW, CEAP, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Virginia and a Certified Employee Assistance Professional.  Ms. Sherman has extensive experience with coaching, short-term problem solving, management consultation, mediation, and facilitation on a range of personal and workplace issues.  She has additional expertise helping employees improve communication skills, balance work and home, manage stress, increase happiness, in domestic violence work, and in helping employees deal with anxiety and depression. Member of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association and the College and University Work Family Association.
